The Mars Volta is a music group from El Paso, Texas, formed in 2001 and currently based out of Mexico. Founded by guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López and vocalist Cedric Bixler-Zavala, the band incorporates various influences including progressive rock, krautrock, jazz fusion, hard rock, Latin American music, and the rhythmic complexity of math rock into their sound.

They are known for their energetic live shows, as well as their concept-based studio albums. In 2009, the band won a Grammy in the "Best Hard Rock Performance" category for the song "Wax Simulacra." They were named rock music's "Best Prog-Rock Band" of 2008 by Rolling Stone magazine.

This version was long overdue for a DVD issue. I've owned the previous VHS and Laser-Disc editions and I've snapped up this DVD edition as part of a slip-cased Da Ponte Box Set released in the UK. The quality of singing and acting talent alone would merit an immediate purchase but the production by Peter Sellars makes it an essential recommendation to any opera lover. It grabs you by your throat and never lets up until the tragic finale. And the finale will take your breath away.

Where has Leonard Cohen been for the past nine years? The legendary songwriter's mostly been in a Zen monastery, it turns out, obsessively rewriting and polishing the oblique, lapidary lyrics for this austere collection. Ten New Songs is arguably Sharon Robinson's record as much as Cohen's--she cowrote all the songs, plays most of the instruments (primarily a synth that seems to have freshly emerged from a chintzy 1984 power ballad), and accompanies Cohen's gloomy croak with her own crooning. This is the most subdued album Cohen's ever made, which is saying something. It's as if he no longer has time for anything in music or performance that could alter the meaning and force of his words.

Review : Paul Lewis (b.1972) has already acquired a substantial reputation, not least through his survey of all thirty-two piano sonatas by Beethoven, which he performed in recitals all round the world between 2005 and 2007. His studio recordings of the sonatas - issued, like this present set, by Harmonia Mundi – have attracted widespread acclaim. I was lucky enough to hear him give Beethoven sonata recitals at the Cheltenham Music Festivals of 2006 and 2007 and on both those occasions I was deeply impressed by his performances. Subsequently, I acquired his full set of the sonatas on CD, which more than confirmed the favourable impression of those concerts. So with his Beethovenian credentials firmly established as far as I was concerned, the prospect of hearing Paul Lewis in recordings of all five Beethoven concertos was extremely enticing.

Rattle's new Beethoven Symphony cycle is a pretty solid disappointment given the high expectations that I, and many others, had for it. My first impressions were lukewarm, but I was hopeful that the cycle would grow on me. Unfortunately, the opposite occured, and after several weeks aquaintance, this cycle has dropped even lower in my estimation.

For 30 years America's most successful contemporary blues guitarist and singer-songwriter didn't release a live album, but now there have been three in just four years. In 2006 there was Live from Across the Pond, recorded at London's Royal Albert Hall when he was opening for Eric Clapton (rather confusingly, the title wasn't changed for its UK release). Two years later came Live at the BBC, featuring 1988 and 1991 recordings from London's Hammersmith Odeon. Now comes yet another live album (which is also his first live DVD release), recorded earlier this year in Mobile, Alabama.

The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette is as good as (if not better) than many of the more vaunted psych pop creations. The songwriting is dense, adventurous and very strong this time around. Like all great legends, Frankie Valli comes through in a big way, delivering some of the best vocal performances of his career.

The harmony singing is breathtaking, never straying too far from what made the Four Season’s such a great mid 60s vocal group (they were often called the Beach Boys of the East!). Three songs exceed the 6 minute mark and are epic productions but the shorter psych pop numbers are just as good.

The Genuine Imitation Life Gazette is no cash-in effort or group attempt at jumping on the psychedelic bandwagon, it’s the real deal. Backward cymbals, phasing and other means of studio experimentation simply add to the group’s strong pop sensibility.
